 Telling the time in English ada dua cara: British style dan American style, American style

cenderung lebih mudah, untuk yang pertama kali kita pelajari adalah bagaimana cara

mengucapkan waktu dalam “British style” dan "American" style?

A. Dalam British style kita akan mengenal:

A quarter : seperempat / 15 menit

A half : setengah / 30 menit

Past/after : lebih / lewat

To : kurang

O’clock : pas/tepat

• Contoh waktu tepat :

Pukul 04.00 : it is four o’clock.

Pukul 09.00 : it is nine o’clock.

Pukul 11.00 : it is eleven o’clock.

Pukul 02.00 : it is two o’clock.

Pukul 06.00 : it is six o’clock.

• Contoh memakai past:

01.04 : it is four past one. (baca: pukul satu lewat empat menit)

09.15 : it is a quarter past nine.

09.27 : it is twenty-seven past nine.

08.30 : it is a half past eight.

• Contoh memakai to:

06.40 : it is twenty to seven. (baca: pukul Tujuh kurang dua puluh)

08.35 : it is twenty-five to eight.

07.45 : it is a quarter to eight.

01.50 : it is ten to two.

02.30 : it is a half to three.

• Catatan:

o’clock hanya digunakan untuk waktu pas atau tepat.

Pukul 07.00 : it is seven o’clock. (benar)

Pukul 07.10 : it is ten past seven o’clock. (tidak usah memakai o’clock)

Jika menitnya 01 – 30, maka memakai past / lewat.

Pukul 07.15 : it is a quarter past seven.

Jika menitnya 30 – 59, maka memakai to/kurang, dengan cara 60 menit dikurangi menitnya,

pukulnya maju ke pukul berikutnya

Pukul 07.40 : It is twenty to eight. (baca: pukul delapan kurang dua puluh menit)

Twenty didapat dari (60-40=20 menit, eight didapat dari pukul 7, maju ke pukul 8)

Pukul 09.59 (kita bisa sebut: jam sepuluh kurang satu menit),maka kita katakan: it’s one to ten.

Kuncinya dalam British style adalah kita menyebut menitnya dulu kemudian past/to baru jam nya.

Pukul 11.04 : it is four past eleven.

Pukul 11.40 : it is twenty to twelve.

B. American style

Penyebutan waktu pada American style sama seperti penyebutan bahasa Indonesia

menggunakan jam digital. Penyebutannya pun jam dulu kemudian menitnya.

• Contoh:

Pukul 08.00 : it is eight o’clock.

Pukul 01.15 : it is one fifteen.

Pukul 09.45 : it is nine forty-five.

Pukul 12.55 : it is twelvefifty-five.

• Catatan:

American style tidak menggunakan istilah past, to, quarter, dan a half.

a.m : ante meridiem (dimulai dari jam 12 malam sampai jam 12 siang)

p.m : post meridiem (dimulai dari jam 12 siang sampai jam 12 malam)
